Last Resorts

To quote Mr. Mark Newman  of the Weekly Christmas Letter "I've said before that Sprite is the default drink. No one 'chooses' it, but you get it because there is no other good option. ... It's just never a first-choice drink...you drink it because it's there."

I find this interesting, I would actually put Sprite about 4th on my list of soft drink choices (behind Coke Zero, regular Coke, and any type of Root Beer). But the interesting thing is that I have a similar theory, only instead of Sprite- I feel the same way about Denny's restaurants.

My usually quote regarding this (told to poor Carma way too many times) is, "Nobody ever goes to Denny's. You just end up there."

Really. I mean, I can't even remember the last time I even ate at a Denny's. Even if you see one, there's usually a Perkins or IHOP or anything more preferable nearby. I seriously wonder how the chain even continues to exist in the first place.

Once when we were on vacation I had googled restaurants near our hotel. Denny's was on the list. And we did CHOOSE to go there (for the record I was pregnant and craving pancakes).

Another reason that Kevin just reminded me of is that Kids Eat Free.

Surely Carma has told you that our family would choose Denny's growing up! We hardly ever ate out, but I think Denny's was the choice if we were celebrating a grant that Dad received. I remember it was a big deal to go with Mom or Dad on our birthday (because then you got a free meal).

I really can't remember the last time I went there, but for the sake of my childhood I must say --
Long live Dennys!

From the way I heard it, the Bylund family received incentives to go to Denny's. Something about David/Opa being a mystery shopper or something. We'd have to get the whole story from him I guess.

All I have to say is, if I was awarded a grant (or a blue ribbon, or whatever), and then someone took me to Denny's...I'd probably stop trying to get grants (or blue ribbons, or whatever).

Long live Perkins.

I clearly grew up with different parents than Jenny or Carma, because I don't remember going to Denny's ONCE with Mom and Dad.

Are you sure you don't mean Melting Pot...?

We used to go to Denny's, when they had a deal that the birthday member got a free meal, but then they stopped doing that and we stopped......etc. We also used to be "undercover customers" - got a free meal and then were reimbursed when we sent in our report on the service, food, etc. So, in summary, "We are the Bylunds. We are chintzy and tight......"
