For Parents Only

The day we have been waiting for has finally arrived. We wondered if it would ever come. Patiently, oh so patiently we have been waiting.

Nico has finally developed a serious interest in using the potty.

(And as all non-parents quit reading...)

So, at three years, three months, and three days we had the magic breakthrough. He had been completely resistant before despite all enticings, bribes, encouragements, prods, and hypnotic suggestions. This past 4th of July weekend though he decided he wanted to wear some "big boy" underpants (with Spiderman on them). When he wet them, he didn't like it, but he still liked the underpants. So, we told him he could wear the underpants (over a pull-up) as long as he kept trying to go to the potty. He ended up peeing in the potty Tuesday morning (he woke up with a dry diaper), starting the magic day.

On Tuesday, he went to school with underpants on and the understanding that if he went pee on the potty, he could keep wearing them. Much to my surprise, he was still wearing them when I picked him up. His teacher was beaming, and informed me that Nico had gone on the potty five times that day. While he didn't go again at home that night (though he tried once), he wanted to try again today. So, he went this morning before school, another three time at school, and once again at home. While he hasn't always kept the pull-up dry, we're still way ahead of where we thought he'd be given his previous lack of interest.

So, actually tonight, it almost seems to be becoming a bit of an obsession with him (I'm not complaining though). He wanted me to text mommy to tell her he was a Big Boy and went pee on the potty. As he was going to bed tonight I told him I was proud of him for being such a big boy and going on the potty. He said "And Mommy too?" I reassured him Mommy was proud of him too. "And Thurman?" Of course. Then it became a game of "Who is proud of Nico?" He listed off Nana and Opa, Em and Richie, Curious George, Jose (Reyes) and the Mets, and all the Army Guys. (So if you want to post a comment to Nico expressing your pride, please feel free, he'll love it.)

In his prayer tonight he said "and thanks that Daddy is so proud of me for going pee on the potty, and bless Mommy to be proud of me for going pee on the potty, and bless Thurman to be proud of me for going pee on the potty."

Fingers are still crossed. We hope this is the true beginning of full-blown potty training. Tomorrow Nico and I will go to Target to buy more pull-up and underpants.

That's awesome! I wonder what switch went off in his mind that suddenly made going potty cool... what a happy day in the Lincoln family!
